About

Kate Wolford is a fine artist from Voorheesville, New York who earned her BFA from Russell Sage College. Post-graduation, she began working in custom picture framing, later expanding into custom handmade frames. Alongside her work as a custom framer, Kate has worked in several galleries as a gallery assistant and art installer. Kate's artwork tends to be small-scale and intimate, with intricate detail painted in acrylic or egg tempera on panel. Mystical and surreal, Kate draws inspiration from nature and memories of her childhood imagination. Her work includes themes of mythology, spirituality, and mortality, and is influenced by pop-surrealism. Today her home and studio is located in Kinderhook, New York.

Artist Statement

My artistic practice bridges both creation and presentation, often blurring the line between painting and sculpture. I think of my pieces as three dimensional objects, rather than images on a flat surface. After graduating with my BFA from Russell Sage College, I began training as a custom picture framer. Along with my experience working in galleries and as an art installer, as a custom framer I was thinking a lot about artwork presentation and how that affects our perception of the artwork. I was interested in the relationship between art and how art is presented and how that affects our perception of the piece itself. In recent years I have begun experimenting with building my own frames, a practice that has become integral to my creative process. I often create a unique display for each piece. Each custom frame becomes an integral part of the work, and is an extension of the artwork itself. My artwork tends to be small-scale and intimate, with intricate detail painted in acrylic or egg tempera on panel. Mystical and surreal, I draw inspiration from nature and memories of my childhood imagination. My work includes themes of mythology, spirituality, and mortality, and is influenced by pop-surrealism.
